Chapter Eleven

“Well, that was another bust.”

Rhys glanced up from his tablet as Logan joined him at the table of a restaurant they’d decided to try.

“So the curator wasn’t a love match?”

She wrinkled her nose. “The curator? We went out a week ago. And, no, we didn’t hit it off.”

“My apologies.” He was starting to have trouble keeping track of all of her dates. There’d been the wine and cheese guy. Then the artist and the curator. He was pretty sure she’d mentioned a graduate student, but who could keep up? “So, who was the bust?”

“The baker.” She let out a sigh so mournful he couldn’t help but grin. “I really wanted that one to work out.”

“So you could get all the free pastries you could ever want?”

Her lips twitched. “I mean, that would have been a perk for sure.”

He clucked his tongue in mock judgment. Actually, it really wasn’t a bad idea. He’d spent a small fortune on croissants and other baked goods in the past few years. Dating a baker would free up a lot of his budget. Maybe Logan was onto something with this finding a French significant other idea.

The fact that he was even considering the possibility was a level of terrifying on par with a masked man jumping out of the bushes with a chainsaw.

Clearing his throat, he topped off both of their wine glasses.

“So what happened with the baker?”

“The date started off well enough.” She took a sip of the rosé and grinned. “Ooh! This one might be the front runner.”

“It’s pretty good.” He gave her a pointed look and prompted her. “The date started off well enough . . .”

She lifted a shoulder. “And then it didn’t.”

“How so?”

“I guess there wasn’t much chemistry. The whole date I just felt like I was a girl. Standing in front of a boy. Wishing he’d get me a baguette.”

Rhys snorted. “Did you ever get it?”

“Yeah, but it was only okay. Anyway, I don’t really want to talk about it.”

Leaning back in his chair, Rhys studied her. It was unlike Logan to keep mum on any subject. Let alone one of her dates. Of course, that was before the incident.

They’d almost kissed. Almost being the key word. They hadn’t. But they both knew it almost had. Neither of them had brought it up then or later. At first, he’d figured it was a fluke they’d get over. Then, as more time passed and the mood around them had changed, it seemed too late to broach the subject.

Besides, it could never happen again. Not as long as she didn’t know the truth about how they’d met. And if it was too late to talk about the almost kiss, it was definitely too late to say, “Oh hey, by the way, I once dated your sister and she asked me to check in on you.”

Rather than belabor either subject—the kiss that hadn’t happened and the date that flopped—Rhys changed it entirely.

“How’s your food checklist going?”

“I’m not making much progress at all.
